Elliot and the ER...

Also known as, Elliot gets stitches two times in one month!

A couple of weeks ago, Elliot grabbed the garbage bag after I took it out of the trash can and cut his finger on something sharp we had thrown away. It was his ring finger on his left hand. We went to urgent care because it was bleeding profusely and he got 2 stitches. He was NOT happy! We had to keep the stitches DRY (as in no slobber from being in his mouth) for a week. However, it didn't slow him down at all!

This is what the little bandage he wore looked like-

And here is how we "baby proofed" it...
Here is proof it didn't slow him down at all. And proof that we had to get him a clean mitten after every meal!

Fast forward to Monday. We are playing out back and Elliot is cruising around on all of the furniture on our back porch. He grabs onto the grill and is holding onto a rough metal edge and looses his balance and falls and doesn't let go. He screams (the bad "I am really hurt" scream). There is lots of blood on our porch. Annalise grabbed me some towels and I got some duct tape and taped them onto his left hand (again! same hand, different finger) and we headed to the ER right away. Thankfully there is a hospital about 1/4 a mile from our front door.

We are getting checked in and Elliot is unhappy and flings all of my carefully taped towels off of his hand and...
I CAN SEE HIS BONE! AKK!

They promptly get us a room and inform me that they just can't sew him up and must take xrays to make sure his bones are okay. Jon arrives right when the xrays happen. Right before Jon got there Annalise got her first glimpse of the wound and she looked horrified and said "I can never see that again! I saw the meat in his finger!" After the xrays they transferred us to the children's hospital in town because the hand surgeon at our hospital wouldn't work on babies as small as Elliot.

The xray. This is the only way I can show you how much of his finger was hanging loose, it was too gory in real life. YIKES!

We left the first ER, dropped Annalise and Noah off at a friends house and headed to Dell Childrens. We got checked in and got a room fairly quickly. We learned that Elliot would need a small surgery to be sewn up. We waited for a couple of hours in our room in the ER while they get all their ducks in a row. Elliot was getting bored, hungry and was in pain. Here he is just shooting the breeze at the hospital while we were waiting for a room-

Passing some time in our room being silly!

Then he got an IV. He was not too happy about this one...

And this DARLING little hospital gown!

Then it was surgery time. They did the operation with general anesthesia in our room in the ER. He has to be under anesthesia because it took about 30 minutes to clean out the wound, examine it, and the sew it up and there is no way we could have held him down that long. We were in the room for the procedure (creepy!!!). It was so crazy seeing him so limp and out of it from the anesthesia.

He cut his finger about 1:15pm and we got home a little before 10pm. It was quite the day! He is on lots of antibiotics to make sure it doesn't get infected. We had to go see a pediatric plastic hand surgeon yesterday because of the possible tendon damage. At this appointment we learned that he didn't sever the tendon but probably knicked it so he got this snazzy little purple splint to wear for the next two weeks to help the tendon and the stitches heal properly. When he crawls the splint is like an arm version of a peg leg.

We are praising God for modern medicine and that his finger wasn't damaged any worse.
If anyone is in the market for fleece footie PJs with the left arm cut off, let me know!!!
